For my data visual, I want to use Google Maps to contract a visual map where site visitors can see what towns on Long Island have either passed or discussed passing laws involving drone regulation. The map will include posts on each city that will describe when the regulation was passed or discussed, what events caused said regulations to be brought to attention, when the regulations were written into law or why the regulation did not go through. This way, viewers can see where drones have been gaining more attention on Long Island and how large of an issue this is becoming. Reporting for this visual involved going through the various town laws and codes to see if there is anything specific involving the restriction or regulation of drones in the area. It also involved going through recent editions of Newsday and Long Island Press to find if there were any stories about drone regulations being passed or public complaints about drones in a Long Island town. Viewers of the site looking to see where it is safe to fly drones or where it is most unlikely for a drone to be flown (if they are drone dissenters) will find the map very useful. For those looking to verify how accurate the data is, I will provide links to the news articles where the issue was brought up and the town website where they can find the legal documents stating drone regulations. To organize the data that I have and organize it on to the map, it would probably take me two to three weeks to complete this visual component.

My other visual pitch is a breakdown of the three grades of drones: toy, hobby and professional. Using photos I’ve taken or basic design photos of each class of drone, the visual would break down essential elements that make each grade standout: price, equipment, price of equipment on drones, battery life, flight capacity, durability to weather and camera abilities. I’ve gathered information on these grades from interviews with recreational pilots and further reporting would involve research on retail shops and online outlets where parts and drones are sold. For those relatively new to the subject of drones, this visual would be a crash course on what makes each grade of drone so special and why people want to use them. This visual would take three weeks to gather photos, verify information and insert said information onto the visual. To verify the information, I would include links to where the parts and equipment are most commonly sold.
